In the present era of “instant communications”, it is difficult to realize how long it took to convey messages in the late nineteenth century. The U.S. Post office was unable to operate a service over such hazardous terrain. The visitor will see example of mail from companies licensed by the Post Office. One of the best known of these was the Pony Express. It operates in both directions from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Riders on horseback carry the mail. The Journey time was reduced from 25 days by coach to 10 days on horseback.
