This charred envelope was recovered from a wrecked mail plane operated by Boeing Air Transport on route CAM 4 near Sidney close to the Colorado border. The plane was flying eastbound on the transcontinental air mail route from San Francisco to Chicago, when the crash occurred during an attempted landing on the 10th January 1930. The salvaged mail was taken to Omaha for onward delivery, either back to the sender or onward to the addressee. Scorched covers received a three line cachet “Damaged by Plane / fire Sidney Nebr / JAN 10, 1930.” Badly damaged covers were accompanied by the printed note from the postmaster and forwarded in an ambulance or penalty envelope with the cachet “SALVAGED FROM BURNED AIRPLANE. JAN 10, 1930”.
