Remains of an envelope and its accompanying letter, heavily charred following the crash of the United States Government mail plane on 5th May 1921 at Rock Springs heading for Denver on the San Francisco to Chicago route.  The plane nose dived into the ground and caught fire killing the pilot.  Apart from the explanatory note from the Postmaster a faint four line cachet was also applied to the envelope marking the crash.  The remains and the Postmasters printed note were forwarded in an ambulance envelope shown in the next image.
